The flight to Egypt of the Holy Family with Mary and Jesus travelling on a camel represents an unusual and rare variation of this theme. The small format reverse glass painting was possibly intended for use in a cabinet. The painting was most likely executed in the workshop of the monogramist VBL, active in Zurich and Naples in the mid-17th century.

The painting has been framed in a period gilded, carved and punched profile frame.
